چکیده

We analyzed the realizations of French voiced fricatives /,Ʒ/ by German non-native and French native speakers, in final position of an accentual group, a position where German fricatives are devoiced. Three speaker levels (from beginners to advanced speakers) and different boundary types (depending on whether the fricative is followed by a pause, a schwa, or is directly followed by the first phoneme of the subsequent group), are considered. A set of cues, among which periodicity, fricative duration, and intensity in low frequencies, is used for voicing analysis. Results show that German realizations vary significantly with language, speakers’ level and boundary type, and argue in favor of an influence of L1 (German) final devoicing on non-native realizations. We discuss these effects as well as the influence of orthography (the presence of a schwa at the end of words).

Realizations of French voiced fricatives by German learners as a function of speaker level and prosodic boundaries

We analyzed the realizations of French voiced fricatives /,Ʒ/ by German learners of French as a function of learners’ levels and prosodic boundaries. Fricatives are embedded in sentences and appear in final position of an accentual group, but not in sentence final position. Results showed that the performance of the speakers is linked to the way they realized boundaries. In particular, we obse...

End-to-End Acoustic Feedback in Language Learning for Correcting Devoiced French Final-Fricatives

This work aims at providing an end-to-end acoustic feedback framework to help learners of French to pronounce voiced fricatives. A classifier ensemble detects voiced/unvoiced utterances, then a correction method is proposed to improve the perception and production of voiced fricatives in a word-final position. Realizations of voiced fricatives contained in French sentences uttered by French and...

L1-L2 Interference: The Case of Final Devoicing of French Voiced Fricatives in Final Position by German Learners

This work is dealing with a case of L1-L2 interference in language learning. The Germans learning French as a second language frequently produce unvoiced fricatives in word-final position instead of the expected voiced fricatives. We investigated the production of French fricatives for 16 non-native (8 beginnerand 8 advanced-learners) and 8 native speakers, and designed auditory feedback to hel...

Differential Difficulties in Perception of Tashlhiyt Berber Consonant Quantity Contrasts by Native Tashlhiyt Listeners vs. Berber-Naïve French Listeners

In a discrimination experiment on several Tashlhiyt Berber singleton-geminate contrasts, we find that French listeners encounter substantial difficulty compared to native speakers. Native listeners of Tashlhiyt perform near ceiling level on all contrasts. French listeners perform better on final contrasts such as fit-fitt than initial contrasts such as bi-bbi or sir-ssir. That is, French listen...

The effect of high-variability training on the perception and production of French stops by German native speakers

We investigated the effect of high-variability training (HVT) on the production and perception of French bilabial voiced and voiceless stops by German native speakers. Stop consonants in the two languages differ with respect to several articulatory and acoustic features. German learners of French (Experiment Group) trained the perception of word-initial bilabial stops spoken by six French nativ...
